The housing stock here is genuinely old, and the garages show it. Homes from the 1920s and 30s were built when a car was narrower and a garage was an outbuilding, so a lot of Old Palo Alto garages sit detached at the end of a long side driveway rather than attached to the house — 215 Lowell Avenue, a landmark estate of over thirteen thousand square feet and about a century old, has exactly that arrangement, with a guest house above the garage. A detached garage down a drive has its own failure profile: a longer power run to the opener, more weather on the door because there's no house sheltering it, and a photo-eye sitting in leaf litter for most of the year. It also means the door is often the original opening, retrofitted with a modern opener that's stronger than anything the frame was designed around. Then there's the tree ordinance, which is the thing that actually surprises people. Palo Alto protects Coast Live Oaks and Valley Oaks at eleven and a half inches diameter and up, Coast Redwoods at eighteen inches, plus any tree the Council has designated as heritage. Extending or widening a driveway is prohibited without a permit if it means paving inside a regulated tree's dripline or within ten feet of the trunk. On a nine-thousand-square-foot lot with a mature oak over the drive — which describes a great many houses here — that radius covers most of the route to a detached garage. So if you're planning to widen an approach for a second car, re-pour a cracked apron, or trench power out to the garage, the tree comes first. The ordinance was last substantially updated in June 2022, the first change since 2002, so anything you were told a few years ago may be out of date.

One thing worth being precise about: Old Palo Alto and Professorville are neighbours, not the same place. Professorville is a separate National Register historic district on the other side of Embarcadero Road, subdivided in 1889 for Stanford professors who wanted to own land rather than lease it from the university. They touch at Embarcadero and they don't overlap, and if your house is on the historic inventory — the city's, the California Register, or the National Register — then work on it has to meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards, which reaches a street-facing garage door. That's a real constraint, not a formality, and it's a reason to have the conversation before ordering a door rather than after.
